We also know how much children love to pretend–and how much they love to pretend they are adults, just like Mommy and Daddy. It’s how they learn: trying a role on for size and imitating what they see (and hear).
There’s a lot of media buzz right now regarding a doll that “shows” little girls how to breastfeed a baby. Certainly, breastfeeding is the most natural way in the world to feed a baby, and its advantages for mother and baby cannot be denied. While natural, though, it does take a little learning and practice to get a good start.
Families that are supportive of breastfeeding, though, do not all support the idea of a realistic baby doll called “Breast Milk Baby.” This doll comes with a halter top with daisies over the nipple area. When the baby doll is brought close to these flowers, the doll makes sucking noises. After the doll is done “feeding,” it must be burped or it will cry.
It’s not the idea that a child would pretend to breastfeed her doll that bothers some parents out there. After all, any young child who has a younger sibling, neighbor or friend who’s breastfed will most likely lift her shirt and pretend to feed her own baby doll. But that halter top is a big stumbling block for parents who object to this doll.
What do you think about a doll like this? Would you buy one for your daughter? Is it cool–or creepy? (And would you like us to include this doll in our Toy Shopping pages?)
