Strongly Bonded

10 Dec

It’s no secret that infants form a deep attachment and connection to their mothers.  But new research shows that this connection goes beyond the emotional; it’s an actual physical phenomenon.

By the age of three months, face-to-face contact, vocalization and smiles between mother and baby actually results in a synchronization of their heartbeats.   How cool is that?

The study did not investigate whether this same phemonemon occurs between fathers and babies, or adoptive parents and infants.  More study will be needed to discover this.  But the idea is fascinating–and supports the idea of engaging your baby–even your very young baby–with eye contact, smiles, and talking or laughing with the baby.
