New and Notable Week: Wrap Me Up, and Never Let Me Go

20 Apr

Newborn babies love to be swaddled; after all, they just spent nine months snuggled up in the womb, so being wrapped up tight feels comforting to them. Newborns are also prone to the Moro Reflex,  where they’ll startle in their sleep (much as we do when we dream we’re falling), but can’t get themselves back to sleep easily like an adult can. There are all sorts of swaddling blankets out there, from traditional receiving blankets to newfangled contraptions that combine snaps, zippers, Velcro, and everything in between.

A favorite of many parents? The Miracle Blanket! It uses a double T-shaped wrapping system to keep baby’s arms securely tethered, while letting their little legs move more freely. As an added bonus, it can be undone from just the waist down for middle-of-the-night diaper changes.

Many parents also say this particular swaddling blanket is helpful for starting to transition older babies away from sleeping swaddled, something you’ll eventually want to do so they can learn to self-soothe themselves at night.

You’ll think your kid looks like the world’s sweetest burrito in it, but after you see how calm they are once they’re swaddled, you may want to do it until they’re teenagers.
