Toys that Stand the Test of Time
14 Oct
You know it’s a good toy when your child’s older siblings and friends of older siblings still want to play with it. There are lots of toys that are targeted for a single, narrow age group. But there are so many others that last and last. Here are some of the classics that have been part of my home:
- Blocks. Soft blocks for babies, and then the basic wooden blocks. Whether they’re colorful or plain natural wood, there’s nothing that stimulates the imagination more than playing with blocks. How tall can you build a tower? Can you make a castle with a wall around it? Can you find the triangle?
- Trains. Little ones enjoy pushing trains around on the tracks. Older children enjoy designing elaborate track designs.
- Kitchen sets and grocery carts. These are not just for girls anymore! We had a brightly-colored set that was a kitchen on one side and a store on the other. All the kids played with it. We saved boxes from foods like pudding, macaroni and cheese, and cereal, as well as empty plastic spice bottles, to stock the kitchen/store.
Toys don’t have to have a movie tie-in to have great play value. Look for the kinds of toys you played with as a child. Chances are, your child will love them just as much.
