My sister and I are close enough in age that when she was born, I was still in the crib. My parents didn’t want to purchase a second crib, but they weren’t ready to put me into a big bed either. So they compromised and got a cradle for my sister, which she used until I was ready to sleep in a bed.

I didn’t realize that my parents had kept this cradle until they offered it to my sister for her baby. They had a woodworker take it apart and replace all the slats so that they’d be a safe distance apart–old-style cradles had slats widely spaced, which is a safety hazard. After adding all-new hardware, the crib was better than new.

My sister used it for her children, then passed it along to my brother for his kids. Finally, it made its way to me. I have both the oldest and the youngest grandchildren in the family, with a ten-year age spread (and one sibling) between them. So my youngest child spent his first few weeks sleeping in a cradle that had also rocked five of his cousins, his uncle and his aunt. How cool is that?
