Watch Out! Baby on the Loose!

It’s always an adventure when babies get mobile. My oldest child spent his whole first summer able to sit, but not yet able to crawl. It was great. I could put him down in the center of a bunch of toys, and he’d still be there playing happily when I turned back around. His sister and brother had a big brother to keep up with, though, and they went straight from sitting to crawling in no time at all.

Babies who can move around on their own discover all kinds of interesting things you might not otherwise notice. For example, one summer night my husband was up in the middle of the night with our wide-awake youngest child. As my husband sat and watched late-night infomercials, the little guy crawled around and discovered–jackpot–his big brother’s nearly-empty ice-cream bowl. Earlier that evening, there had been chocolate ice cream in it. By the time the baby got done with it, there was chocolate all over him, the floor, and my husband’s legs and feet.

Similarly, we discovered that our oldest child was tall enough to reach the top of the kitchen table when he swiped a whole stick of butter from the butter dish and was caught eating it like a popsicle.
