Close the Gate!

When our oldest two children were born, we lived in a ranch house. We had one baby gate, strategically placed in the hallway so the toddler couldn’t get into the bathroom and master bedroom. superyard Everything else was pretty much fair game, though I do remember sliding a second gate under the computer desk, between the two sides of the desk and near the wall, to keep curious little fingers away from power cords. And we had one of the play-yards pictured, which was great indoors and out and which has been home to the Christmas tree more than one winter. Kids can’t climb the Christmas tree when it’s in the play-yard!

A few years after we moved into our current home, our youngest was born. This house has stairs, and plenty of them. It’s a split-level, which means that there aren’t any full flights of stairs except down to the basement–but there are three semi-flights of stairs throughout the house. We had gates everywhere. Our friends started referring to our home as “The Gated Community.” It’s a good thing we all have long legs, because we spent an amazing amount of time climbing over baby gates until I was willing to allow my toddler freedom to pillage the entire house the little guy learned to navigate the stairs.
