National Parks

Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument

Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument is the site of the June 25, 1876 battle between the U.S. Army's seventh cavalry, guided by Crow and Arikara scouts, and several bands of Lakota Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapaho.  Guided bus tours are offered through the concessionaire at Little Big Horn College.  Self-guided walking tours are available for the battle related sites and the national cemetery.  A self-guiding, 5 mile tour road enables visitors to follow and observe the sites related to the battle.

Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area is a lesser known treasure waiting to be discovered. It boasts breath-taking scenery, countless varieties of wildlife, and abundant recreational opportunities, such as boating, fishing, ice fishing, camping, and hiking. Glacier National Park covers over 1 million acres of forests, lakes, meadows, and high rocky peaks. 63 species of mammals and 272 species of birds contribute to the spectacular diversity of life preserved in the park. A wonderful place for camping, boating, fishing, hiking, wildlife viewing and much more.  Park Rangers conduct naturalist activities at St. Mary, Apgar, Logan Pass, Many Glacier, Goat Haunt, and Two Medicine. A complete schedule of programs is listed in the Nature with at Naturalist publication. Activities include evening slide programs, guided hikes, boat tours, and all day hikes.

Big Hole National Battlefield

Big Hole National Battlefield is a memorial to the people who fought and died here on August 9 and 10, 1877; combatants in a five month conflict that came to be called the Nez Perce War of 1877.  Regularly scheduled ranger guided tours are available daily, in the summer.

Summer - Family Vacation Hot Spots (Beaches, Lakes, etc.)

Canyon Ferry Lake - Fishing, swimming, water sports, boating, picnicking and camping.  Just 20 miles east of Helena along U.S. 12 / 287.

Fort Peck Lake - Fishing, Swimming, boating, nature walks and camping.  The Charles Russell National Wildlife Refuge is on the eastern side of the lake. Other popular stops include Devil's Creek, Rock Creek State Park, the Pines and the Fossil Fields and Museum.  This is a very large lake extending up to 90 miles from southwest to northeast. It is accessible off Montana State Route 24 at Fort Peck.

Lake Elwell - Fishing, swimming, boating and camping.  Home of Tiber Dam State Park. Located about 40 miles southeast of Shelby just south of U.S. 2.

Flathead Lake - Fishing, swimming, water sport and camping.  Accessible along U.S. 93 north of Polston.

Lakes of Glacier National Forest - Scenic mountains provide a wonderful backdrop for boaters and canoe's.  Lakes west of the Continental Divide include Kintia, Bowman, McDonald, which are lakes that are near recreational areas.  East of the Continental Divide lies Lake Sherburne and Two Medicine, which both have nearby recreational areas including camping.

Discovery Ski Area is known for their light powder, inexpensive prices, uncrowded slopes, delicious food, and friendly atmosphere. The terrain ranges from gentle beginner slopes to extreme skiing on the back side. There are 380 acres of skiable terrain equally divided between beginner, intermediate, advanced and expert slopes. The ski area is located 95 miles southeast of Missoula and 45 northwest of Butte.

There are spectacular views of the three major mountain wilderness ranges that surround the resort.  Wide open alpine meadows, perfectly groomed continuous slopes, mogul fields, a challenging cornice and long sweeping runs. High speed detachable gondolas and chairlifts combine to give Big Sky a capacity of over 20,000 skiers an hour. You'll really appreciate those gondolas on snowy days as they keep you out of the weather on the ride up.  Beginning skiers have a choice of a rope tow area for first timers, or their own chairlift with several wide, gentle runs where they'll be apart from the more advanced skiers. Even beginners can enjoy the gondola ride and ski the long green run, Mr. K. With over 65 miles of skiing, there's plenty to keep all levels of ability happily entertained.

Bridger Bowl has 1,500 skiable acres with over 2,600 vertical feet. One thousand of those acres and 2,000 vertical feet are lift accessed by 1 quad chair, 2 triple chairs and 4 double chairs. There are 69 named runs with the longest one being 3 miles in length. The area is flanked by two large bowls to the North and South. Most of the area offers wide open terrain with a variety of landscapes including long slopes, glades, chutes, gullies in addition to other smaller bowls. Bridger Bowl offers a very diverse ski experience with the following ratings: 25% beginner, 35% intermediate, 30% advance and 10% extreme.
