for the third year...

Gear

Furniture

Car Seat: once your child reaches 30 to 50 pounds it's time for a booster seat.  See our tips on choosing a car seat.
Lightweight stroller that's easy to carry.  See our tips on choosing a stroller.

Bed: Your child will probably outgrow his or her crib by their second birthday at which time you will switch to a regular bed, with guardrails.
Dresser
Child sized table & chairs

Clothing

Diapering / Toilet training

Shirts
Pants
Pajamas
Shoes & socks
Jackets & sweaters
Hats or bonnets
Mittens or gloves
Swimwear
You can start to get away from the one piece outfits, but you may still want to buy clothes, jackets and shoes that are easy to put on and take off.  You will also want clothes that are durable.

Potty / toilet training seat
Stool: (For toilet attached training seats and so your child can wash their hands at the sink.
While some children begin toilet training at around 1 1/2 years of age, you'll want to have a training seat ready to go before your child is ready.  Some training seats attach directly to a regular toilet, in which case you will need the stool, while other training seats are freestanding and child size.

Feeding

Bathing

Booster seat (These seats strap to regular sized chairs, which allow your little one to reach the table.)
Plastic plates (Some plates have separate compartments so different food doesn't touch one another and some plates also have suction cups which keeps the plate on the table.)
Non-spill drinking cups
Toddler size spoons & forks, which have wider handles for easier grasping.  (You'll still probably want to hold off on having them use knives.)

Bath Toys
Bubble bath soap
