Choosing a Baby Play Yard (Playpen)

Most parents will agree, play yards are one of the most wonderful, convenient, ideal pieces of baby equipment that new parents can have.  While different parents refer to them as either baby playpens, play yards, portable playards, or baby travel yards, you will not find many parents without one.

Baby Playards come in many colors, models, styles and brands, which often confuse new parents.  While there are a lot of playards to choose from, the decision on which play yard you want does not have to be that difficult.

Most play yards are basically the same, with each one having its own set of unique features.  Baby playards are usually a standard rectangular size, with a center floor, mesh sides and top and bottom rails that lock and unlock allowing the entire unit to fold up in a convenient size for easy storage and transporting.  With most playards folding up in a neat convenient size, it makes them perfect for traveling, going to the grandparents' house, or taking a trip to the park.

Features of Play Yards

  • Fold up completely to fit in a carrying case - Most playyards can fold up into a long rectangular shape and fit inside of a carrying case for easy transport.

  • Wheels - allow for easy maneuverability throughout the home.

  • Bassinet - Some play yards also come with a built in bassinet for newborns.  These bassinets are used until your baby reaches about 10 to 15 pounds at which time they can be removed.

  • Changing station - When you're traveling, this extra feature on some play yards is very handy.  These changing stations usually fit on top of the play yard for changing diapers and are then removed when not being used.

  • Canopy - If you plan on using your play yard as a baby playpen when you're outdoors, this is an important feature you should look for.  These canopies protect your baby from the sun and also provide a cooling shade.

  • Playpen or crib - When traveling, it can be used as a baby playpen during the day to give the parents a break and then be used as a portable crib at night.

Tips on choosing a Play yard

  • Safety is the number one concern when choosing a baby play yard or playpen - Make sure the play yard has the JPMA (Juvenile Products Manufacturing Association) logo.  The JPMA along with the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) and the CPSC (Consumer Products Safety Commission) all work together in developing safety standards for baby products like play yards.

  • Easy cleanup - Most parents prefer models with mesh sides and removable fitted sheets for easy cleanup.

  • Choose one that meets your needs - Will you be using the play yard mostly at home?  Using it outdoors? or Using it while traveling?  Buy a play yard with the features you need.

  • Ease of Use - While most baby play yards are easy to set up and take down, be sure they can be folded up with ease while also being sturdy.  The Play yards you find for sale on our site have been reviewed by different parents as having all the convenient features that are needed.

Safety Tips

  • Never leave your baby unattended in the play yard

  • The play yard should have padding on the top and corner rails.

  • Don't ever add padding or other objects that can allow your child a way to climb out.

  • Don't leave sheets or loose bedding inside the playpen area, which could pose a safety problem if your child becomes wrapped up in the bedding.

  • Always make sure the posts and rails are in the locked position before you put your baby or child in the play yard.

  • Don't tie toys or other items across the top of the playpen.  This could cause a strangulation hazard.

  • Check all of the mesh sides and fabric frequently for rips or tears.

  • The holes in the mesh should be no larger than 1/4 inch.

  • If you are considering a wooden playpen, make sure the slats are no more than 2 3/8 inches apart.

As a final Note

Always send in your product registration card.  This is how you will be notified in case of a recall.
