- After the second week, if baby’s weight
gain and output are good, you can begin feeding on baby’s cues. No need
to wake baby for night feedings at this point. However, remember the
minimum of 8 feedings every 24 hours.
- Some babies begin pooping much less
frequently around the 4th/5th/6th week. Baby may skip days between
poops. This change is very normal as long as the poop is still loose and
profuse after several days. Don’t worry.
- Growth spurts (a.k.a. APPETITE spurts)
occur at about 10 days to 3 weeks and again at about 6 weeks. That first
growth spurt, along with breasts not feeling as full, makes some moms
question their milk supply. Look at your baby - if the numbers above are
fine, all is well! Be sure to feed your baby on his cue during growth
spurts. It may seem as if baby is nursing all the time during these
spurts. This is very normal, and *necessary* to boost your supply to
meet baby’s growing appetite. It will only last a few days.
- If you want your baby to be able to take
an occasional bottle of expressed breast milk, between 4-6 weeks is the
best time to offer the first one. Offering a bottle earlier than this
can cause “nipple confusion” (which can result in a poor latch, sore
nipples, etc.)
